Fungal Forage & Winter Events

Hi all. Our Fungal Forage last Saturday was a great success. 9 came and we were led by local Ecologist and Environmentalist Alison Plackett. Alison had done her homework and led us to a number of sites and helped identify the Fungi growing there. Old Green Crumblie here forgot her camera so was unable to take any pics for you to see. Alison did so, however, so a record has been made. When she has time in her busy life she will write up the finds and let us have it, complete with photos I hope.
BIG THANK YOU to Alison.
Our NOVEMBER event will take place on Saturday 26th meeting car park at 10.30am. We will do a litter pick first, followed by a Sausage Sizzle. If you want to bring your own bangers please do so, and I do mean sausages and not fireworks.
Also in November two of us will visit Primet Junior school to coach the children in Poems and a dance for the Tree Dressing ceremony. Part of our outreach to the local community.
In DECEMBER we are hosting Primet Juniors for a Tree Dressing Ceremony at the Wooden Circle, in Presence of the Green Man. They arrive car park at 10.30am on Friday Dec. 2nd.
On Saturday December 3rd also starting 10.30am at car park we have Barrowford Beaver cubs
coming for a similar Ceremony and all members of the public are welcome. Bring a Bauble or Ribbon to tie on tree and make a wish.
AWARDS.Finally 3 of us go to Blackpool on Wednesday November 2nd to the Spirit of Lancashire Awards
We have been shortlisted in the Grass Roots section. Let's keep our fingers crossed we do well.

Long time, no posts!

Friends of Greenfield LNR visit Brockholes

Where did most of 2011 go? Mid-August and I haven't put a single thing on the blog! But Friends of Greenfield L.N.R. have been busy during the year. Apart from our usual work sessions, Balsam Bashing and the like, we have been successful in getting some award money to make improvements. With an award of over £4,600 and with the efforts of Pendle Environmental Action Group,(see photos above) we had a Hut/Hide erected by the pond and the wooden rail and walk way extended right round. So access can be had to any side of the pond. For this project we have been shortlisted for The Spirit of Lancashire Awards in the Grass Roots section, to be held in Blackpool, November.
A second award of £1000 from Body Shop will enable us to paint the Hut/Hide with soya based ecopaints, purchase a brush cutter and put some flooring down inside the Hide. Any surplus will purchase some Pond Dipping Equipment. Speaking of which, we hosted a party of 18 Beaver Scout cubs one evening in July, and gave them nature walks, incorporating our wooden henge circle built with logs, and Pond Dipping (See pictures above). A beautiful card of thanks was received from them.
Our latest expedition was on Sunday 14th August when a group of 8 of us went to the new Lancs. Wild Life Trust Nature Reserve, Brockholes, near Preston. It turned out to be warm and sunny and it was a good day.
We next look forward to Judges and Film team coming to visit the Reserve on Monday 12th September when a short film will be made, with interviews and activity going on. This will be used in deciding who will win the Spirit of Lancashire Award for this year. At the filming we hope to give our 2011 Young Green Volunteer at Greenfield Award. A certificate and an embroidered T-shirt will be presented to the recipient.
On September 14th we have our next Committee meeting and will decide on Dates and Activities for the coming Autumn and Winter.

Bat Walk & Talk 2010

Hi it's been a while since I updated the blog. Things have been happening at Greenfield LNR. The overhead trees endangering the power lines have been culled by the company responsible, and a very good job of tidying up after have they made. Also Robert and his merry band have done a big clear at the old pond and we now have really visible expanses of water. Still trying to get funding for completing our pond area project which would include the hut/hide and a path round the side and back of the pond to link up with the existing platforms. It's a lot of money and a tall order but we'll keep trying!
On Friday 15th October we were fortunate to have David Anderson come along for a Bat Walk & Talk.David is curator of Natural History at Towneley Hall. A dozen people, including some new ones, went off with David and spotted four Pipstrelles. He wants to come back next May or June to do another walk which should be more productive, as it will be a better time of year.
On the menu is a Hallowe'en Family Frolics with sausage sizzle and ssh...some special Pumpkin Pie. Bring your own sausages on Saturday October 30th October meet car park. 10.00am.
End of November on Saturday 27th at 10.00am we shall be tackling clearing the New Pond to try to find out exactly what we have there. Some tools will be provided but bring shears, rakes, clippers or anything that will cut and clear. Usual hot drinks etc after. If you know of any able bodied, willing helpers please bring them along!
Finally on Saturday December 4th we are once again having our Tree Dressing Ceremony.Bring a bauble or ribbon to hang on the tree. Dress warmly. We meet at 10.00am at the carpark.
FINANCE AND NEW MEMBERS. The Executive Committee will meet WEDNESDAY 17th NOVEMBER
7.00pm at Ann's house. Details of how to get there can be obtained from 01282 859745. Any ideas for Fund Raising Events, and how to attract new members will be apperciated. Let Annette or David know please. This is now vital if we are to continue as a group. We have just paid out £900 as our contribution to the cost of our smart new notice-board and as a result our funds are somewhat depleted!By the way there will be an official unveiling of the Notice-board with a representative from Calico who back Small Sparks grants.Notice of this will be circulated when a date has been set. That's about it folks for now.

Pond Action Project

Guardian of the Ponds at Greenfield LNR ???
The gang at Crosby with one of the statues.
It's been awhile, so here's an update on our activities.
We've had a successful Fund Raising Evening for Conservation of Red Squirrels, and followed it up with a visit to Formby Hills to have a session with Sally Orritt the Red Squirrel Conservation Officer. We enjoyed our day out by the sea and ended up at Crosby to view the famous statues emerging from the sea.
We continued with our Balsam Bashing and got a lot out, but it is a pretty hopeless task. But we try our best.At the moment the Reserve is awash with wild flowers and well worth a visit.
We have been awarded £500. from Small Sparks to go towards our new notice-board which should be erected at the entrance soon.
Also we have been awarded £50. from Action Earth 2010 which will be spent on an ongoing Pond Project. On.Saturday 26th June meeting at our car park at 10.30am we will be having an extra special Pond Dipping session. All welcome. Wear wellingtons, old clothes. All under 16years must have an accompanying responsible adult. We will provide equipment and drinks and biscuits. Phone 01282 859745 for information
or directions,or e-mail: nettie_hawkins71@yahoo.co.uk
The Friends Group will have a break from organised activities in July and August and start again in September. Already in the pipeline are :-Unveiling Ceremony for our New Notice Board;Bat Talk and Walk; a Hallowe'en Batty Arts evening;Tree Dressing Ceremony in early December. This year we shall ask participants to come dressed as Wood Sprites, Green Men or Spirit of the Woodlands. But wrap up warm as well, because it is December after all and we don't want anyone catching pneumonia!
More to follow later.
